Want to start a chapter of Sigma Alpha Omega®on YOUR campus?

This page will tell you how to get started.

There are a few things you should do before you begin your journey to starting a chapter:

  • Have at least three young women who have prayed and feel led by Christ to reach out to their campus and community through the fellowship of a sisterhood. These individuals (or at least three of the total) should NOT be graduating within the next semester.
  • Meet with your student organizations/activities office to determine the necessary steps needed to start a new organization on your campus. Get duplicate copies of any necessary paperwork. Should you desire to start a chapter, you will be asked to submit a copy of any necessary paperwork to the board.
  • Request a Sigma Alpha Omega® Information Packet by contacting the national office at info@sigmaalphaomega.org. Please include the name of your college/university and your physical mailing address in your request for the Information Packet.
  • Continue to pray for God's direction.

Samantha Ortiz is Sigma Alpha Omega®’s current Expansion Director.  She is happy to answer any and all questions you may have regarding starting your own chapter.  Please email her to request information regarding starting a chapter: info@sigmaalphaomega.org.

Frequently Asked Questions on Starting a Chapter:

Q: How long will it take to start a chapter of SAO on my campus?

A: Starting a chapter will take approximately one full semester.

Q: What are the benefits of being in a nationally recognized Christian sorority?

A: There are many benefits to being part of a nationally recognized Christian sorority. Here are just a few:

  • First and foremost you have a huge prayer network spanning not only the United States from coast to coast, but worldwide! How awesome it is to know that you have sisters all around the world praying for you.
  • You will have the opportunity to attend the annual National Convention each year (location will vary), where you will be able to meet sisters from across the country.
  • A rapidly growing alumni base, which is great for networking.

Q: Do I have to be a specific denomination to be a part of the sorority?

A: Not at all! SAO is an nondenominational/interdenominational organization. All we ask is that you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It's really awesome to know that we're not called to be a specific denomination, but to simply be followers of Christ. Therefore, we will never try to force you to adhere to a specific doctrine or become a member of a certain church.

Q: What types of activities does SAO participate in?

A: Each chapter holds different types of events. Some chapters that are within commuting distance of each other will sometimes hold joint activities. Activities always/often include: Bible studies, prayer walks, praise & worship events, service projects, fundraisers, sleepovers, holiday socials, game nights, semi-formals, and formals among others.

Q: Is there a Christian fraternity?

A: YES! Sigma Alpha Omega® was formed from Chi Alpha Omega Christian fraternity. Some of our chapters have brother chapters of XAO, while others do not. However, some of our chapters have other brother fraternities on their campuses.
